An Introduction to Menorca

Mahon in Menorca

Menorca is the northernmost and easternmost Balearic island with more beaches than the rest of the Balearic Islands put together, offering a much lower-key atmosphere than its larger neighbour, Majorca, Menorca is a fantastic destination for relaxation and is also a great place for families.

Rugged cliffs give way to secluded coves and sedate waters. Lush green countryside is home to olive groves and orchards. Narrow cobbled streets tumble down to quaint fishing harbours. Menorca was declared Reservation of the Biosphere by the UNESCO in 1993.

Menorca is known for some beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. In the North, the beaches are dark and coarse-grained, whereas in the South, the beaches are bright and offer ideal terms for families with children. The two largest cities are Mahon (Mao), eastern- based and Ciutadella, in the West of the island. Mahon is the capital of Menorca. A small, nice city with Georgian houses, narrow alleys and hospitable inhabitants. Ferries from the mainland and Majorca arrive in Mahon busy port. Of course, Mahon also boasts the islands airport. Ciutadella, for a long time the capital of Menorca, offers beautiful, ancient palaces, lovely churches and narrow alleyways. Getting from Mahon to Ciutadella is very easy as Menorca's main road, from Mahon to Ciutadella, divides the island into north and south. It passes through the towns of Alaior, Es Mercadal and Ferreries, and along the way smaller roads branch off towards the beaches and resorts of the north and south coasts.

Many of the islands most significant archaeological relics are signposted off the main road.

The average temperature is between 16c and 17c but you'll find that in summer it is usually around 24c

The official languages in Menorca are Spanish and Catalan and the currency is the Euro.
